The Tragedy of Samson

The Tragedy of Samson

Judges 13-16:

If in life there is someone who seems to be blessed beyond others with strength, intelligence, wisdom and even a physical appearance that is remarkable and yet as they go through life the main focus seems to be SELF.... we say it is a great tragedy. Many times we see those with so much potential for greatness, so many blessings in one person, so much talent and ability that the sky is the limit on what they can accomplish.  Then as they grow older the focus becomes more and more about SELF.  So many times you think, if only they had some humility mixed in with all the other great blessings they have, they could reach their potential.  The tragedy is that so many do not recognize or appreciate their "gifts" and "blessings" until it's too late.  The lure to please SELF has brought in drugs or alcohol or greed or sexual perversion or just simple "busy" distractions of life.  It could be that it's nothing that would be considered a great sin but because of their blessings (which come from God) they trust in SELF and God gets the leftovers of their attention if any at all. They have made such a mess out of their lives that the best memories of them are about the potential they had and not the  accomplishments you could name.

That's what I think of with Samson.  He was blessed in so many ways.  He had looks, strength, charisma, wisdom, intelligence, a loving family and an awesome God !!!  What do we remember about Samson?

  1. Disregarded the wise advice of his parents not to marry a foreigner, which was against God's will.
  2. Gloried within himself when he used his God-given abilities
  3. Blinded and lured by the sexual lust that he allowed to burn in his heart
  4. God's will was done despite the poor character of Samson
  5. So much more potential than what he lived out

What if Samson had been humble enough to listen to his parents, his advisers and His God.... how many wonderful stories could have been written about the great things Samson accomplished for his family, for his people and for his God ?

What about us?  God can and will accomplish anything He wants to do but His desire is obviously to count on His people to share in His work. The only way to limit the power of God is to refuse or neglect to use the blessings that He gives us all. When this life is over, let's not let the first thing people say about us be something like, "Well they had so much potential... what if they had only........ "

Because of our great blessings and His great love toward us.... why not ask ourselves today, "What more can I do for Him???"
